The Cleveland Botanical Garden is participating in the North American Japanese Garden Association’s initiative Gardens for Peace with interactive activities every Tuesday in August! Drop by our Japanese Garden anytime to learn about various facets of Japanese culture and take part in the peaceful activities listed below.

August 1: Wishing Tree

Trees are symbols of life, hope, and resilience, so we’re celebrating the Japanese tradition of offering wishes to trees with a relaxing little activity in our Japanese Garden. Come write down or draw your wish and attach it to our ethereal European Beech tree. We’re putting good energy into the world, one wish at a time.

August 8: Haiku

On August 8, stop by the Japanese Garden anytime to learn about the Japanese art of haiku writing. We’ll have chalkboards scattered throughout the garden for guests to try their hand at writing their own.

August 15: Shinrin-Yoku & Meditation

Immerse yourself in the beautiful nature of the garden through Shinrin-Yoku, or forest bathing. This Japanese practice is a widely recognized form of medical treatment for both physical and mental afflictions. Come for some calming green tea and get some tips on how to begin a short meditation session.

August 22: Origami

Spend some time in nature while honing your skills in origami. Guests will learn how to fold paper to create origami peace cranes, and the finished products will hang from the wisteria arbor.

August 29: Pulling the Rake 4 Peace

Karesansui is the Japanese art of dry landscape design. Our own Japanese Garden features a dry river and a pond made from small stones, but many karesansui gardens have gravel or sand raked into beautiful patterns. On August 29, visitors can come rake their own designs into sand-filled trays and gather more information about this ancient practice.
