With more than 3,500 acres of land and the diversity of wildlife, it is essential that the Arboretum strikes a balance between people, wildlife and plants.

The goal of the wildlife management program is to provide for the maximum bio-diversity of plants and animals.

A wide range of wildlife is common at the Arboretum, including white-tailed deer, Canada geese, gray and black squirrels, a wide variety of bats and other winged animals, raccoons, opossum, groundhogs, muskrat, skunk, fox and coyote. Reports of black bear are rare but have been spotted at the Arboretum.

The police department collaborates with our wildlife biologist to assist with nuisance problems and the well-planned control of some species. Working in cooperation with the Horticulture and Conservation departments, we have many ongoing wildlife programs.
