Fall is perfect for fungi!
Join us at the Long Science Center for a day dedicated to wild mushrooms and other fungi. We will start with an introductory meeting, then divide into small groups to search for fungi in Holden’s natural areas. We will reconvene at the end of the day to identify our findings with the help of mushroom field guides and experienced mycologists from Holden and the Ohio Mushroom Society.
Participants should come prepared to spend a few hours exploring the woods. Terrain may include time off trail, small hills, uneven footing, wet grass, and gravel. Please wear comfortable walking shoes.
Price includes a field guide and loupe hand lens. Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunch. Other helpful supplies include:
A basket (or paper bag)
A notepad
Water
Trail snack
Hand sanitizer
Camera or smart phone
Terrain: up to 2.0 miles, natural surfaces, some hills, uneven footing, slow pace
Age: Adult
Time: 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Location: Holden Arboretum | Long Science Center (9717 Mitchells Mill Road)

Research Specialist (Soil Ecology)
I am a fungal ecologist focused on connections between soil fungi and tree health. My research couples field collections with modern molecular identification methods to investigate ectomycorrhizal species diversity and function. As a research specialist in Dr. David Burke’s lab at the Holden Arboretum, I support research on soil ecology and forest pathology. Currently, I focus on the role of soil fungi in urban canopy restoration in Cleveland, OH. Trees growing in urbanized environments are subject to pressures such as habitat fragmentation, exposure to heavy metals, and soil compaction. Mycorrhizal fungi can enhance plant growth, disease resistance, and drought tolerance; therefore, it is necessary that we establish a better understanding of how these fungi might improve outcomes of urban restoration efforts. Beyond this, I enjoy discussing the importance of fungal research and conservation with diverse audiences through teaching, writing, and mentorship.
Ohio Mushroom Society
Formed in 1973, The Ohio Mushroom Society has widespread membership mainly in Ohio, but also in several surrounding states. Members range from the beginning collector to the professional mycologist and include mycophagists (mushroom eaters), photographers, artists, toxicologists, and nature enthusiasts.
