Seasonal Experiences

Fall Color Watch Oct. 15th

This is a good week to view tupelo (Nyssa sylvatica) at the arboretum, which also happens to be our featured tree of the month. Staghorn sumac (Rhus typhina), and highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) are also beginning to give impressive color, as well as Persimmons (Diospyros virginiana cultivars) near Blueberry Pond showcasing some golden yellow fall foliage and ripening fruit. Purchase tickets to visit arboretum. At the botanical garden, fall color arrives a little later, but there are still bright bursts of color throughout the grounds with festive displays of mums, pumpkins and seasonal planters, perfect for fall photo opportunities! Purchase tickets to visit botanical garden.

Kalberer Emergent Tower and Murch Canopy Walk

Experience fall color from a new perspective at the Arboretum. The Murch Canopy Walk invites guests on a 500-foot-long elevated walkway that is built 65 feet above the forest floor. The Emergent Tower is 120 feet or approximately 12 stories tall and provides a breathtaking view of the surrounding area all the way to Lake Erie. Buy tickets here.

Tree of the Month: Tupelo

This selection has a very tight, upright habit unlike the species. The lustrous dark green summer foliage turns impressive shades of orange in early fall. The upright narrow habit is ideal for smaller spaces and as an urban tree. Black gums prefer full sun to partial shade and will thrive with almost no maintenance once established. Great tree for wildlife.
