Brian Asquith (May 30 – September 20)

Inspired by a childhood fascination with nature—examining insects, stones, and tide pools—the work reflects an early, unfulfilled dream of becoming an entomologist. The watercolor paintings are often based on real specimens, with selective use of heightened or imaginative color to intensify visual impact. By preserving fragile subjects in paint, Brian’s work invites reflection on nature’s beauty and humanity’s growing disconnection from it.

Kenneth Marunowski, The Garden of Painterly Delights

Botanical paintings are some of my favorites to create! Responding to the splendor of color, shape, and texture present in the world of flora is simply a delight, which is why I chose “The Garden of Painterly Delights” as the title for my exhibition. The title puns on Hieronymus Bosch’s astounding triptych, The Garden of Earthly Delights, and substitutes “Painterly” for “Earthly,” an aesthetic quality I enjoy that denotes gestural brushwork and rich, juicy paint application. When entering a garden of lush botanicals, like the gorgeously curated, yearly orchid show here at the Cleveland Botanical Garden, my senses become overwhelmed in the most positive of ways as my focus shifts between individual flowers and the seas of evocative hues that stimulate my vision. With experiences like these in mind, I created a body of large, abstract paintings that attempts to mimic this wonderment. One may lose oneself in the details of a swath of generously applied paint or step back to revel in the overall design of an image bubbling over with exuberant color, active markmaking, and visceral textures.

About Kenneth Marunowski

Kenneth Marunowski is an artist and educator who lives and works in his hometown of Valley View, Ohio. From Kent State University, Marunowski earned a BA and BFA in French and Painting respectively, studying in Aix-en-Provence, France his junior year. After earning an MA in English as a Second Language and a Ph.D in Literacy and Rhetoric studies, Ken taught professional writing at the University of Minnesota Duluth before establishing himself as a full-time artist in Bend, Oregon. Back home in Valley View, Ken shares his rigorous pursuit of painting through the works he creates and workshops he teaches.

María Alejandra Zanetta, Recent Works

My work explores the dynamic interplay of color, pattern, and texture through acrylic, mixed media paintings and linoleum cut prints on collage. One of the qualities of printmaking that attracts me most is that it maintains an element of unpredictability from start to finish. Each print has its own personality and uniqueness, not only because of the printing process but because each print is developed in conjunction with a collage that gives each print its distinct characteristics. Through landscape painting I seek to capture the unyielding energy of the natural world through a blend of abstraction and rhythmic motion. Winding paths and undulating fields evoke nature’s constant movement, while thick, dark outlines both define and bind the landscape, underscoring the deep interconnectedness of all living things. I am also drawn to the genre of still life because it allows me to capture the quiet beauty and joy inherent in everyday moments. By layering diverse materials and techniques, I build rich, tactile surfaces that evoke energy and vibrancy. Ultimately, I aim to share this sense of enduring joy with the viewer, offering a reminder that beauty and happiness are necessary forces in our daily lives.

About María Alejandra Zanetta

I was born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where I studied Fine Arts at the National School for the Arts. I later moved to the United States to attend The Ohio State University, where I earned my doctorate in comparative literature and art. Upon graduation, I joined the University of Akron. I am currently a docent at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

I have exhibited in private and public galleries in Ohio, New York, Ohio, Texas and New Jersey and my artwork is held by private and public collections such as The Ohio State University , The University of Akron, The Columbus Metropolitan Library, Summa Health Akron, Summa Health Barberton, Akron-Summit Public Library, Leadership Akron, Bridgestone Americas Technical Center Akron, The Akron Land Bank, Federal Process Corporation Cleveland, Cleveland Art Association (CARTA) and The Ortega y Gasset Foundation, Toledo, Spain.
