Planting a meadow isn’t the only way to benefit native bees.
Join us on a walking tour showcasing the essential role spring-flowering trees and shrubs play in supporting native bees and other wildlife. Participants will learn which native and ornamental species provide critical nectar and pollen resources when early emerging pollinators need them most. Come away with practical insights into creating pollinator-friendly spaces, improving the ecological value of built landscapes.

Horticulturist, Holden Arboretum
Kate Small is a dedicated horticulturist at the Holden Arboretum, bringing over 12 years of experience in public garden management. With a degree in Landscape Architecture and certifications in permaculture design, water-efficient landscaping, and pollinator stewardship, she takes a holistic approach to garden design and ecological restoration. As Chair of the Holden Forests & Gardens Sustainability Committee and a board member of Friends of Heights Parks, Kate leads initiatives that promote environmental stewardship and foster community engagement. Her expertise extends to urban forestry, where she applies her credentials as an ISA Certified Arborist with a Tree Risk Assessment Qualification to enhance the resilience and ecological value of green spaces. Committed to sustainable landscape practices and biodiversity conservation, Kate integrates science-based strategies with thoughtful design to create vibrant, ecologically rich gardens that benefit both people and nature.
