Get an exclusive look at the labs and workspaces where our scientists are pioneering breakthroughs in plant science, then head across the lot to see our Seed Bank and hear updates about how Holden’s seed saving work contributes to local restoration projects.

Wednesday 4/22: Long-Term Forest Research Tour
Hike Bole Woods with Dr. Katie Stuble and learn how HF&G scientists study biodiversity threats like agricultural land use history, invasive species, and deer herbivory to better understand their effects on the forest. (Terrain: 1.5 miles, mostly flat, natural surface trails, some grass, expect muddy conditions)

Thursday 4/23: Behind-the-Scenes Animal Care Tour
Join our animal care team at Cleveland Botanical Garden to learn what it’s like to care for the critters that call our biomes home, from tortoises to chameleons to butterflies. (Capacity is limited due to the size of our animal care rooms.)

Sarah Kyker, PhD
Postdoctoral Research Associate
Dr. Sarah Carrino-Kyker is a microbial ecologist interested in the influence of environmental change, both natural and human-caused, on microbial communities. Her current research is focused on the soil communities of forests, how they’re impacted by environmental changes, and how these impacts in turn affect the health of the overall habitat or ecosystem.
Kim Lessman
Seed Bank Manager
Kim is passionate about our natural world and have spent the last decade immersed in organic farming, addressing food insecurity in urban areas, and saving seeds in support of a regionally adapted seed supply. Her previous work with the Cleveland Seed Bank presented an avenue for her to begin working with native plant species in our bioregion, and her interest and passion in stewarding native seeds for conservation and restoration has only grown since.
Katie Stuble, PhD
Director of Research
Plant Biologist & Director of Research Katie Stuble has a Bachelor of Arts from St. Mary’s College of Maryland. She earned her Master’s in Ecology at the University of Georgia and a Ph.D in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Tennessee. She took her position as a research scientist at Holden Forests & Gardens in 2016.
