Warren H. Corning founded our rhododendron collection in 1940. And in 1971, contributions made in honor of Helen S. Layer allowed for the creation of a surrounding, 20-acre garden.
This breathtaking land is marked with rolling hills and shaded by solid oaks and maples.
Featuring these equally astounding attractions:
Rhododendron collection | Spanning 52 species, including several unique plant hybrids developed by local breeders. Pictured: Rhododendron ‘Aglo’.
The “Guardians of the Garden”| Dan Sammon, a local artist, created this sculpture with just a chainsaw and a torch, working from the remains of a 150-year-old red oak that broke apart in 2007.
The mesmerizing Heath, Hourglass, and Sherwin ponds| The iconic heron statue in Sherwin pond is dedicated to Harold Layer, who helped fund this area in honor of his late wife, Helen.
The Judith and Maynard H. Murch IV Canopy Walk| The Canopy Walk invites guests to stroll along a 500-foot-long elevated walkway that rises 65 feet above the forest floor. Walk amongst the treetops, and appreciate our forest from an entirely new perspective.
Pieris japonica ‘Scarlet O’Hara’| Spring and summer are perfect seasons to stroll through the garden and appreciate the blooms.
Rhododendron calendulaceum| View dozens upon dozens of rhododendrons and azaleas species.
