Join us for an afternoon exploring some of the forest’s tiniest treasures.

Mosses are seedless plants that lack the internal plumbing that enables other plants to grow tall. Lichens, aptly described as “fungi that invented agriculture,” are dual organisms that epitomize symbiosis. Being small, desiccation-resistant and requiring very little nutrition, both mosses and lichens are found in environments that are too stressful for most plants to grow. They are a delight to find on bark, rocks, and barren ground. We will explore their different growth forms and methods of reproduction and learn how to identify the most common Ohio species. Special attention will be paid to ones that were discovered here or are named for Ohio botanists.
