A four-season garden planted with a mix of trees, shrubs, perennials, and bulbs, this garden is home to two of the Arboretum’s most iconic attractions: the Arthur S. Holden Sr. Hedge Collection and the lilac collection.
The hedge collection
Home landscape inspiration | The hedge collection was designed in 1969 to provide visitors with inspiration for their own selection and maintenance practices.
View a variety of hedges | It showcases a variety of lush hedges, valued for both their aesthetic and environmental benefits. All the hedges in our collection are pruned by hand. It’s more time-consuming, but gives the greenery a more natural look—and we’re sure you’ll agree that the end result is worth the effort.
The lilac collection
350 lilac plants | The collection includes about 350 lilac plants, all of which are native to Europe and Asia.
Early spring beauty | Depending on the species, you can find these iconic flowers in bloom from early May to mid-June.
