Our beloved Japanese Garden is turning 50! Discover the timeless harmony of nature and design. Delight in quiet spaces, delicate bonsai, calming activities, and stories that reveal the deeper meaning behind each stone and bloom. The exhibit extends beyond our Japanese Garden, inviting you to learn about the origins and intentions behind our space. As you make your way back to our Japanese Garden, you will be ready to identify and appreciate the many conscious efforts made to reflect the traditional elements and values of Japanese garden design.
Japanese gardens are often given names which reflect their characters. Gan Ryuu Tei, the name of our garden, means Rock Stream Garden. The rock stream, as well as symbolic mountains and clouds, can be appreciated while on a short walk through the Japanese Garden.

Registration & InfoThe History of Gan Ryuu Tei
Our Japanese Garden was given the name Gan Ryuu Tei (rock, stream, garden) to reflect the chosen composition of rocks, plants and a dry waterfall. The garden began as a vision in 1959, when members of Ikebana International sought to bring the art and spirit of Japanese flower arranging to life in a living landscape. By 1965, they partnered with the Garden Center of Greater Cleveland to create a space that reflected both cultural tradition and natural beauty. Designed by David A. Slawson, who blended the dry landscape and tea garden styles, the garden officially opened in 1975 with the support of community leaders and international dignitaries. Today, it remains a place of quiet reflection and cross-cultural connection.
Support Garden Improvements
As we celebrate 50 years of this important garden, we have plans to make some small renovations. Priority projects include renovating the walkway, replacing the pergola, rejuvenating the garden’s plantings to maintain harmony and aesthetic balance, and replacing invasive ground cover.
