A Sun Print Alphabet by Kim Lavery in Perennial Playspace
I made several small sun prints for one letter/number each day, for 36 consecutive days. Focusing on just one character a day gave me parameters to create within. I experimented with found objects and materials from my home and garden to make each 3×3” study. I also experimented with a variety of exposure times, chemical reactions (adding salt, soap, spices) and post-print applications like, tea baths, painting with watercolor and gold ink, and using colored pencils. Since each print is exposed outdoors, weather played a big role in how long each print should be exposed, and some days, I was working in the rain. At the end of the 36 days, I edited the entire collection into a Sun Print Alphabet Poster, complete with 26 letters and 10 numbers.

A Spectrum of Color by Gunter Schwegler Cafe Gallery
My work is a celebration of life. Through my images I try to make viewers more fully aware of their surroundings, often with a humorous or novel twist. My aim is to revel what is often overlooked or taken for granted, or to bring out not necessarily what is seen, but what is underneath and just felt.
I started painting when I was 5, inspired by the sunsets reflecting on the surface of Lake Erie. Throughout my youth I drew and doodled constantly, but it wasn’t until I was in my mid 20s that I returned to painting. Around 1988 I discovered silk painting for the first time, and immediately knew that this would be my preferred medium.
I find Images i can use everywhere- nature, cities, dreams, animals, machines, light and shadow. Often I will change the subjects into something abstract, or use unexpected colors. The painting sometimes emerges slowly; sometimes I start not knowing how it will wind up. The work becomes a dialogue between it and myself, it tells me what it wants me to do.
I start with only the primary colors and black, and mix them as I go along. I feel a kinship with the medieval alchemists, adding a drop of this or that to get the exact shade and intensity I want. When I took up silk, a lot happened by chance, and with practice and experience I gained control of the medium and the ability to get the effects I want. Silk is a rather unforgiving medium; there is little or no possibility to make changes or corrections. And in there are still surprises: the fixation process at the end changes the dyes, and only after the final rinse do they appear in full brilliance.
