It’s (Still) Poppin’: September 27th

Autumn is in the air at the Holden Arboretum, and some cooler days and nights have arrived as well. Thankfully, there’s a great number of blooms to enjoy mixed in with the fall foliage. Check out this week’s highlights:

Japanese anemone – (Anemone ‘Red Riding Hood’) in the Display Garden. This NEW cutie was bred by Yoshihiro Kanazawa. Mature height: 18 inches.
Penstemon ‘Flock of Flamingos’ in the Display Garden. NEW from Terra Nova Nurseries, Washington, USA. Mature height: 3 feet.
Autumn-crocus(Colchicum ‘Waterlily’) by Corning Visitor Center. CLASSIC. Bred between 1900 & 1905 by J.J. Kerbert and introduced by Zocher & Company, Netherlands. Mature height of flowers: 7 inches.
New England aster (Symphyotrichum novaeangliae). Display Garden, SE side of Lotus Pond. NATIVE. Some of its siblings have pink to pale pink flowers. Mature height: 3-5 feet.
Maximilian sunflower (Helianthus maximiliani). Butterfly Garden, NW side. Native to midcontinental prairie regions, spread along railroads and highways into all areas of North America. Mature height: 6-8 feet.
 
Franklin tree (Franklinia alatamaha). Display Garden, S end. Found by plant explorer and King’s Botanist John Bartram along the Alatamaha River of the southern frontier of Georgia over 250 years ago. Only in gardens now. Mature height: 20-30 feet.

Ethan learned to keep records while working for the Arnold Arboretum (1985-89) and Holden Arboretum (1981-82, 1989-present) while volunteering for the International Dendrological Research Institute, Ohio Nursery and Landscape Association Plant Selection Committee, and American Conifer Society. He was the point person when the American Association of Museums accredited Holden Arboretum as the sixth public garden in the U.S. as a museum.
