Headwaters, Tree Hugger, Piney Woods Link
Pierson Valley is now home to over 4 miles of new trails including Headwaters Trail, Tree Hugger Trail, and the Piney Woods Link. You’ll step into a realm of ancient old-growth forests, pristine streams, and deep canyons. We’ve incorporated natural crossings and minimalistic features to ensure a great experience—all without compromising the ecosystem.
When the new trail system is completed, it’ll be the largest hiking-only natural surface trail development in the region, encompassing 10 miles of exploration through never-before-seen areas of the Arboretum.
As of 12/3: Pierson Valley Trails are temporary closed due to snowy weather conditions.
Of course, if you’re looking for a shorter route, you can always take these trails individually.
Here’s a little more on what to expect from each of them!

Learn moreHiking Dos and Don’ts
Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or new to the whole “outdoorsy” thing, it’s always a good idea to brush up on hiking dos and don’ts.
Whether you opt for hiking boots or walking shoes, it’s important that you’re comfortable. No blisters here! Depending on the weather, you may also want to dress in layers—you’d be surprised how some unexpected wind or sun can shake things up. To that point, wear a hat or sunblock if needed, and always accessorize with your favorite water bottle. Bug spray is a good idea, too!
Our trails are a beautiful destination for all—and a sacred home for our wildlife! Make sure that you take only memories and not “souvenirs,” like a pinecone or wildflower. When we’re all respectful of the Arboretum, we can help ensure people, plants, and animals will continue to thrive in it for generations to come.
We welcome outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. No matter your interest or level of hiking experience, there’s a trail for everyone!
If you’re walking with a bigger group, stick to the right side of the trail for easy passing. Leave your big Bluetooth speaker at home, and if you bring your own food, make sure to clean up after yourself. We promise we’re not picky—we just want to provide a fun experience for all!
Do: Let furry friends in on the fun
We allow leashed dogs on our grounds. Of course, the standard etiquette applies. For the safety of your pup and all other visitors, make sure to keep your leash in hand, and pick up after them as needed.
We’re so excited to see you on our grounds—and we hope you feel more prepared than ever. Happy hiking!
