Holden Forests & Gardens Receives Federal Earmark to Fund Work in Urban Forestry

The Holden Arboretum is pleased to announce the nonprofit organization is slated to receive $335,000 in Congressionally Directed Spending, sponsored by U.S. Senator Sherrod Brown. This earmark will support Holden’s Forest Resiliency and Conservation and Canopy Coverage Expansion Project, promoting science, conservation, and urban forestry.

Jesse Owens Olympic Oak Tree Continues to take Root this Fall with New Documentary and Grafted Sapling Next to Site of Original Tree

Eighty-five years ago, a priceless oak tree was planted by Jesse Owens in Cleveland at James Ford Rhodes High School, a symbol of athletic and cultural triumph. This fall, a horticulturally propagated tree from the Jesse Owens Olympic Oak will be planted next to the site of the original tree. A documentary that tells the story of this iconic tree will debut at the Chagrin Documentary Film Fest this fall.

CLEVELAND) March 30, 2021 – Holden Forests & Gardens (HF&G) has received a generous $200,000 grant from the Cleveland Foundation to support People for Trees™, a public awareness initiative that encourages and empowers residents in communities across Northeast Ohio to plant and care for a tree, beginning with making a pledge. The aim is to have 15,000 new trees planted by 2025.

Hundreds of Colorful Butterflies Return to the Cleveland Botanical Garden’s Glasshouse



To celebrate the arrival of spring in a big way, Holden Forest & Gardens presents Return of the Butterflies at the Cleveland Botanical Garden – a visual treat with more than 600 newly emerged butterflies in Costa Rica biome beginning Saturday, April 3rd.



The butterflies in the Costa Rica biome will bring the Glasshouse to life—amazing, colorful, moving, exhilarating life and you’ll see them actively searching for nectar as food sources, flying around. “The sheer proliferation of butterflies is a memorable experience,” says Jillian Slane, director of exhibits and experiences. “You get to interact with them when you walk through the Glasshouse,” she relates. “It’s a strong bond and connection to nature.”

Experience fall in all its beauty this October at the Holden Arboretum and Cleveland Botanical Garden. Along with soaking up fall colors from new heights on the arboretum’s Murch Canopy Walk and Kalberer Emergent Tower, visitors can enjoy special family programming during a Halloween Whodunnit Mystery from Saturday, October 3rd – Sunday, October 18th and explore the grounds on a Leaf Trail through October. The botanical garden will usher in fall fun with gorgeous outdoor fall plants and container arrangements, Children’s Strolling Storytime, and a new Holden Halloween House Party activity pack program.
