Don’t miss this amazing opportunity to learn from Holden Arboretum’s research scientists!

All Scientist Lecture Series talks are free and open to the public. They will take place in Reinberger Classroom at the Holden Arboretum Corning Visitors Center. Registration is required. Please register for each session separately.

Thursday, May 25 | 11 a.m. – noon | Dr. Ben Lee
Spring ephemeral wildflowers and their vulnerability to climate change

Spring wildflowers are an extremely charismatic component of eastern deciduous forests, much loved by naturalists and gardeners alike. Dr. Ben Lee will first discuss new research into the diversity and biogeographical distributions of spring ephemeral wildflowers across eastern North America. He will then discuss the ways in which climate change is likely to affect the performance of these important plants by the end of the century, with comparisons to spring wildflowers in Asia and Europe.

Friday, June 23 | 11 a.m. – noon | Dr. Hector Ortiz
Ecology, history and cultural knowledge working together to better understand the future of forests in the face of climate change

For thousands of years, we humans have accumulated knowledge about how our activities impact forest ecology and functioning. In the last 70 years the average rate of population growth has doubled, severely impacting our forests. Every year, around the world hundreds of thousands of hectares of forest are lost because of wood extraction and fires. Looking to the future, but learning from the past: What are the lessons that our ancestors learned in the forests when they faced past climate change? And how can we use those lessons to ensure the future of our forests in upcoming climate change? Here, Dr. Ortiz will discuss traditional ecological knowledge and its application to research and forest management in current climate change.

Friday, July 28 | 11 a.m. – noon | Dr. Rainee Kaczorowski
The Effects of Floral Traits on Plant-Pollinator Interactions

Flowers can exhibit great variation in many different traits and those floral traits can influence pollinator behavior. There are many different types of pollinators, and they can have very different sensory sensitivities or preferences for certain characteristics over others. This talk will feature some insights about the effects of floral traits on plant-pollinator interactions gained from various research projects. In addition, plant-pollinator interactions can be easily observed by high school students, providing them an opportunity to conduct meaningful experiments that expose them to the complexity of our natural environment.

Thursday, August 24 | 11 am – noon | Dr. Chelsea Miller
From ants and seeds to botanical gardens and climate change: the story of an ecologist’s evolution

If you have ever chatted with a scientist, you may have heard them refer to their “research program.” What is a research program, and how does a scientist establish one? Very often, a research program originates as a product of a combined set of circumstances largely outside of the researcher’s control. As the researcher gains knowledge, experience, skills, and confidence, they begin to shape and direct their research program in increasingly more mindful ways. In this talk, I will discuss my own development as an ecologist through the lens of my research program, illustrating the gradual shift in both the biological scope and scale of the questions I address, to the size and diversity of the teams with whom I work. By discussing my own personal experience as a scientific researcher, I hope to “lift the veil” on the process of becoming one, so that people from all walks of life can envision themselves in that role.

Dr. Ben Lee

Dr. Ben Lee

is a postdoctoral research fellow currently working at Holden Forests and Gardens, the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, and the University of Pittsburgh. His current research investigates the role of climate change in shaping plant-fungal symbioses through the use of 120-year-old herbarium specimens.

Dr. Hector Ortiz

Dr. Hector Ortiz

is originally from Sonora, Mexico. He has a Bachelor’s degree in biotechnology, with a focus on agronomy, agroecology, and botany, and a Master’s in natural resources and arid environments. He completed his PhD in Wildlife and Wildlands Conservation at Brigham Young University. He currently works as a postdoctoral scientist at Holden Arboretum.

Dr. Rainee Kaczorowski

Dr. Rainee Kaczorowski

is a pollination biologist who is now teaching biology at The Neighborhood Academy, a college prep school for financially disadvantaged children, located in Pittsburgh, PA.

Dr. Chelsea Miller

Dr. Chelsea Miller

is an ecologist who is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher in Dr. Katie Stuble’s lab at The Holden Arboretum.
